Movie-Theater Giant Acts on Technology Decisions With Input From Experts

A mix of older technology began to hinder business users and technical staff at AMC Entertainment. The company needed a new infrastructure and considered both Microsoft and open-source solutions. AMC attended several Microsoft Technology Center (MTC) engagements, which provided their team with the technical insight and support to make a confident technology decision, implement the solution quickly, and conserve resources.

Crytek: We seem to lead the charts in piracy by a large margin

PC Play has an interview with Cevat Yerli, president of the German studio Crytek, the studio that bought the first person shooter Crysis. In this interview, Yerli states that piracy is a big problem for Crytek, and I think I know why. PC Play: How do you estimate the current state of the PC gaming industry? Some say that it’s only a matter of time when it’s going to finally die-off, the others say that “the big one” is only getting its comeback pace. Considering Crysis is a PC-exclusive title, what do you think of its market reception and its future? Skeptics would say that it’s pretty risky going PC-exclusive with such a high-profile title. Cevat Yerli: It is certainly….

Derbyshire on Expelled [Dispatches from the Culture Wars]

John Derbyshire, the National Review writer who can be so absurd on other subjects but tends to be dead on when it comes to evolution and creationism, has a post at NRO about Expelled. He argues that the many deceptions and falsehoods in the film flow from one central deceit at the core of the ID movement, and I think he’s right. Long excerpt below the fold.

The Bill Comes Due

Lots of talk about former President Bill Clinton these days. Perhaps, as Bono once said, too much talk. He is a force out there on the trail, as ABC News’ Sarah Amos reports. And yet . . . House Majority…

Crazy Bizzatch of the Day

Just the thought of being married to this witch is depressing. I never thought someone could make Heather Mills look like an angel by comparison.

I love how this woman has no idea why her husband would possibly want to throw her annoying-ass out of the apartment. This is absolutely unbelievable:

Traffic-Aware Firewall Optimization Strategies

The overall performance of a firewall is crucial in enforcing and administrating security, especially when the network is under attack. The continuous growth of the Internet, coupled with the increasing sophistication of the attacks, is placing stringent demands on firewall performance. This paper describes a traffic-aware optimization framework to improve the operational cost of firewalls. Based on this framework, a set of tools are designed that inspect and analyze both multidimensional firewall rules and traffic logs and construct the optimal equivalent firewall rules based on the observed traffic characteristics. To the best of the knowledge, this work is the first to use traffic characteristics in firewall optimization.

Microhoo: Wall Street gets antsy

Wall Street is a big prediction market and traders are increasingly getting antsy about Microsoft’s next move regarding Yahoo. As we all know, Microsoft’s negotiate or else deadline passed on Saturday and it has been radio silence ever since. The two primary moves for Microsoft are to launch a proxy war or walk away. A few days ago it was a no-brainer that Microsoft would launch a proxy war, but if you follow the stocks you see some serious uncertainty. At one point today, the spread between Microsoft and Yahoo shares were the widest since the deal was announced. Yahoo shares dipped below $26 a share on Tuesday before closing higher based on a rather thin CNBC report that Microsoft…
