Modeling TCP is fundamental for understanding Internet behavior. The reason is that TCP is responsible for carrying a huge quota of the Internet traffic. During last decade many analytical models have attempted to capture dynamics and steady-state behavior of standard TCP congestion control algorithms. In particular, models proposed in literature have been mainly focused on finding relationships among the throughput achieved by a TCP flow, the segment loss probability, and the Round Trip Time (RTT) of the connection, which the flow goes through. Recently, Westwood+ TCP algorithm has been proposed to improve the performance of classic New Reno TCP, especially over paths characterized by high bandwidth-delay products.

Weak moments: JK Rowling may give in to temptation and write an eighth Harry Potter book.

Wow, the latest news is that JK Rowling might be convinced to write an eighth Harry Potter book, especially in response to her 14-year-old daughter, Jessica’s, urging.

The list of players to be named in George Mitchell’s report about steroids in baseball has posted by a few Web sites and then taken down.
However, I found one site that still has the names on there.
Here it is.
Some names that popped out at me, current and retired: Roger Clemens, Lenny Dykstra, Johnny Damon, Nomar Garciaparra, Wally Joyner, Trot Nixon, Albert Pujols, Andy Pettitte and John

Ionut was digging around through the source code in Gmail when he stumbled across some pieces of text he thinks indicates “updates” for your friends could soon be part of the integrated Google Talk module. The source code he found includes snippets of text including the following: Add comment Remove from chat and updates Delete this update These small pieces of text are definitely interesting, and we could very well be getting a glimpse into the next hot feature in Gmail. It’s unclear what kind of “updates” we will see for our contacts, but Ionut speculates it could be descriptions of things users have done on other Google properties. It’s not very clear what kind of updates you will receive,…

Almost a decade after its publication in, the steady-state throughput equation of TCP by Padhye et al. remains the most widely used method for calculating the throughput that a TCP sender obtains under certain environment conditions. While there is now a wealth of other models available, many of which are better in some aspect, none of them seems to strike the same balance between precision and ease of use that makes the equation by Padhye et al. the useful tool that it is.

The editors of the journal Neuron are now publishing readers’ comments on the journal’s website. Comments can be made online for any paper published in the journal, including all of those in the online back archive.
Neuron is owned by Elsevier, and the decision to publish online readers’ comments is an interesting one. This is because although Elsevier is one of several publishing giants who have been vehemently opposed to the open access movement, it is now following in the footsteps of the open access Public Library of Science journals, which began publishing readers’ comments earlier this year. At PLoS, readers’ comments are moderated by Bora Zivkovic.
Here are the guidelines for publishing comments on Neuron.

If you read one political story today, let it be Tucker Carlson’s on-the-road journey with Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, at The New Republic. I agree with Andrew, I forgot how good a writer Tucker is, too. — jpt
